Surviving with Dignity

Kolkata, India, 2017

In a world of luxury and excess where abundance is often taken for granted, it is easy to not see the extreme poverty that eats away at the lives of some humans. But in Kolkata, there are fortune houses built right next to railway tracks, made of canvas, cardboard, and wood scraps, resting on a dirt floor. The constant danger of trains passing by, the deafening noise, the suffocating heat of the city, and the dust raised by the tracks can make the atmosphere unbearable. But despite these difficult conditions, the people living in these houses are filled with dignity and will to survive.
